If young, trainable workers are what you need, then
Brownsville is the place for you.
Brownsville has one of the nation's fastest growing
populations. The 2000 Census counted 320,000 people in the
Brownsville MSA, an increase of 25 percent over 1990.
Demographic projections call for the population to reach
500,000 within a 15-year span.
And it's a young population. The median age is 25 years old,
almost 10 years younger than the national average. It’s no
surprise then that almost 40% of the city's people are
enrolled in the public school or university systems.
Of course, the quality of the workforce is an important
consideration. Companies find that Brownsville workers are
highly productive and quality conscious. Local firms
consistently earn quality distinctions such as ISO 9001, QS
9000, ISO 14000, Q1 and World Class Supplier.
On the list of major employers, education is tops. The
Brownsville school district remains at #1 by far with over
7,000 employees. In place #3, is the University of Texas at
Brownsville with 1,800 workers. Local government is
represented by Cameron County and the City of Brownsville in
places #4 and #6, respectively. Among private employers, the
largest are AMFELS, Wal-Mart and Convergys Corp.
Workforce Assistance
If you are looking for workforce assistance, Cameron Works,
Inc. is an agency charged with overseeing and providing
workforce development services to employers and job seekers
of Cameron County.
There are two Texas Workforce Centers in Brownsville. They
offer recruiting, retention, training, retraining, and
outplacement services as well as valuable information on
labor law and labor market statistics.
The centers extend the reach of companies' human resources
efforts through their extensive pool of job seekers.
Thousands of candidates provide background data including
their past work experience and skills. At the same time,
employers provide the centers with job openings, specifying
requirements, qualifications, and other pertinent
information. By screening job seekers, the Texas Workforce
Centers match candidates with those jobs for which they are
most qualified. The job seekers are then referred to
employers for interviews.
To make this process as quick and easy as possible, the
Texas Workforce Centers often host businesses for "on-site
recruitments" where they can interview and hire at the
centers themselves.
