Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville
The Sisters of Mercy founded the city's first hospital
in 1923. Now owned by Valley Baptist Health Systems, VBMC-Brownsville
has grown to be a valley leader in health care. More than
850 health care professionals help operate the 217- bed
facility. VBMC-Brownsville is fully accredited by the Joint
Commission on the accreditation of Health Care
Organizations. VBMC-Brownsville is a full service facility,
offering both inpatient and outpatient service ranging from
simple laboratory tests, to those requiring sophisticated
technology such as magnetic resonance imaging. VBMC-Brownsville
offers a wide range of cardiac services, The Center for
Diabetes Management, an Outpatient Rehabilitation Facility,
and a special facility devoted to Women's Medical Services.
VBMC-Brownsville has a Professional Tower that currently
houses 18 physician offices, a lobby and more. VBMC-Brownsville's
Surgical Intensive Care Unit was the first of its kind in
Brownsville with a second Cardiac Catheterization
Laboratory, Cardiac Outpatient Area a 24-hour-stay unit
added at the same time.
Completed in 1999, VBMC-Brownsville built a three-story
tower that includes 32 Women’s Services beds, a new 21,500
square foot Emergency Department, a 32 bed Newborn Nursery,
meeting rooms for our expanded Women’s Service events, and

Volume Computed Tomography, 64-slice CT scanner in the Rio
Grande Valley. Physician are now able to capture images of a
beating heart in five seconds, an organ in one second, and
perform whole body trauma in ten seconds, more than twice as
fast as conventional CT scanners.

Outpatient Care
Numerous clinics, laboratories, medical centers, minor
emergency centers, outpatient surgicare centers and night
clinics are available from which to select any type of
health care need. Brownsville is also fortunate to have a
vast number of excellent physicians who serve our area. Many
are general practitioners, but specialists also serve
patients without the need to travel to a larger city for
specialized treatment.
Nursing Homes and Assisted Living
Medical care is provided at several nursing homes in
Brownsville for both those in need of constant health care
and for the elderly. All the local nursing homes here offer
flexible financial plans, skilled and professional medical
staff with an emphasis on individual patient and family
needs. One of the local nursing homes has just opened a
special high security unit specifically designed to meet the
needs of Alzheimer's patients.
