Brownsville, like all of Texas, has no income tax. In place
of an income tax is a variety of other taxes used to support
the public schools, roads and services. The two most notable
are property taxes and sales tax.
Brownsville city sales tax is 8.25%.
The list
of sales-taxable items varies, but Texas, to its credit,
does not levy a tax on unprepared food.
Ad
valorem taxes are levied against real estate property based
on the appraised market value of real property. See
www.cameroncad.org
for details.
Tax rates
are based on per $100 assessed valuation
